KIRINYAGA

Nestled on the fertile southern slopes of Mount Kenya, Kirinyaga is one of the country’s most celebrated coffee regions. Volcanic soils, cool nights, and high altitudes create ideal conditions for slow cherry development, resulting in coffees with vivid acidity, layered fruit tones, and remarkable clarity. Smallholder farmers in Kirinyaga often deliver to cooperative washing stations, where meticulous processing has built the region’s reputation for producing some of the most distinctive and sought-after coffees in the world. This lot is a masterful combination of four celebrated varieties - SL28, SL34, Ruiri 11, and Batian — coming together in a cup that reflects both tradition and innovation.

ABOUT THE COFFEE

SL28
Developed in the 1930s by Scott Agricultural Laboratories in Kenya, SL28 is one of the country’s most celebrated coffee varieties. Known for its deep root system and drought resistance, it consistently produces cups with bright acidity and layered fruit complexity — a hallmark of classic Kenyan coffee.

SL34
Also developed by Scott Labs, SL34 thrives at higher altitudes with abundant rainfall. It shares genetic ties with Bourbon and Typica, giving it a balanced profile with rich sweetness and structure. SL34 often complements SL28, creating blends with both clarity and depth.

Ruiri 11
Released in 1985 by the Coffee Research Foundation in Kenya, Ruiri 11 was bred as a response to devastating coffee diseases like Coffee Berry Disease (CBD) and leaf rust. It’s a compact hybrid that allows higher yields while still carrying the fruit-forward flavors associated with traditional Kenyan varieties.

Batian
Named after the highest peak of Mount Kenya, Batian was introduced in 2010 as another disease-resistant hybrid. Unlike many hybrids, Batian matures quickly and has been well-received for producing cups with surprising complexity — often reminiscent of its SL28 and SL34 heritage.
